Noakhali Hosts Discussion, Awards for National Fisheries Week

Noakhali Correspondent : A meeting for discussion and an award distribution ceremony took place, initiated by the Noakhali District Administration and the District Fisheries Department, in celebration of National Fisheries Week-2025, themed ‘Build a sanctuary, fill the country with native fish’.

The event was held in the conference room of the Noakhali Deputy Commissioner at 11 am on Monday (August 18). Prior to this, various species of fish fry were released into the pond next to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Iqbal Hossain chaired the program, with Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Istiak Ahmed serving as the chief guest.

Special guests included Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mohammad Fayez Uddin, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Akhinur Jahan Nila, and Dr. Mehedi Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of the Fisheries and Marine Science Department at Noakhali University of Science and Technology.

During the discussion, speakers highlighted that Noakhali, being a coastal district, has immense potential for fisheries resources. Proper utilization of these natural resources could lead to increased employment opportunities, poverty reduction, and a significant boost to the national economy. Alongside enhancing fish production in river and coastal regions, it is crucial to effectively implement government directives aimed at protecting marine fish. Fish not only meets food demands but also supports the livelihoods of millions involved in the industry. This sector needs modernization and a technology-driven approach. Therefore, there is a strong focus on training farmers, translating research findings into practical applications, and raising public awareness.

The speakers expressed hope that a new horizon will open in the fisheries sector in the coastal region centered on Noakhali and the country will move further in earning foreign exchange.

At the event, awards and honors were presented to the district’s best fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and successful entrepreneurs in recognition of their special contributions to the fisheries sector.
