Malaysia to reopen labor market for Bangladeshi workers

B Mirror Report:  According to a press statement released today, Malaysia has agreed to decrease migration expenses and reopen its labor market for Bangladeshi workers in response to successful attempts by the Bangladeshi government.

A bilateral meeting on labor migration was held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, where both sides discussed sector-specific labor demands, transparent recruitment systems, and measures to prevent worker exploitation. Bangladesh’s Minister for Labour and Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, along with Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin, led the delegation. They met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who praised Bangladesh’s democratic progress and extended an invitation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The meeting focused on ensuring ethical recruitment, addressing structural barriers, reducing intermediaries, and expediting deployment of stranded workers. Both parties welcomed Malaysia’s plan to introduce an AI-driven recruitment platform to minimize costs and enforce the “employer pays” principle, aligning with International Labour Organization (ILO) guidelines. Bangladesh expressed full support for the initiative.

In addition, the discussions covered legal cases on human trafficking, protection of irregular workers, and improving labor market alignment through skills development, training, certification, and information exchange. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in labor, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

The meeting concluded with a joint statement emphasizing a transparent, inclusive, and practical framework for safe, orderly, and fair labor migration between the two countries.
