Lakshmipur Traders’ Association elections postponed by High Court ruling

Tabarak Lakshmipur Correspondent: After nearly 45 years, the Traders’ Association elections were scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at the Government Merchants Academy grounds in Raipur, Lakshmipur. However, in response to a writ submitted by an attorney named Abdul Majid, the High Court issued a rule and postponed the elections. Ainun Nahar Siddiqa and Kazi Zinat Haque, two members of the High Court’s double bench, ordered the elections to be postponed for a month on Thursday afternoon, June 26.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC), Raipur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Chittagong Divisional Registrar (RGEC), Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, and Upazila Agriculture Officer were then directed to react to the regulation.

When the Banik Samiti election candidates and supporters learned of this writ on Thursday afternoon, June 26, they were disappointed. UNO Imran Khan convened an urgent meeting with the candidates at the Upazila Parishad at 5 p.m.

The High Court attorney for the writ petitioner, Raipur city resident Md. Abdul Majid, verified the matter to this reporter on Friday. Two registered organizations of traders cannot exist in the same location, according to Section 3 of the Trade Organizations Ordinance, 1961, according to attorney Md. Tacheb Hossain. Furthermore, it is impossible to operate a trading organization without registration. Recently, however, elections were held under the name of Raipur Banik Samiti by the local government, which included UNO. Considering. In view of the writ filed by Abdul Majid, the High Court issued a rule and ordered the postponement of the election.

In this regard, Md. Majedul Islam, the Raipur Upazila Agriculture Officer and Returning Officer of the Merchants’ Association election, stated, “I am hearing about the postponement of the election from the people, but I have not received a copy of the court order yet.” UNO Imran Khan attended a meeting with the Merchants’ Association election candidates, during which it was agreed that additional action would be taken once the copy of the writ was formally received.

Recently, 1,625 traders registered to vote in the Raipur Bazar Merchants’ Association election, by the way. The president and general secretary are among the 16 positions for which 55 individuals are running. The candidates are running very competitive campaigns. All necessary arrangements have been made by the local government to hold the voting at the Merchants’ Academy ground on Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
