The European Union (EU) has pledged an additional €0.7 million to support those affected by Cyclone Remal, bringing its total contribution to nearly €2 million. This aid aims to bolster the ongoing emergency response led by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the EU Embassy in Dhaka announced on Sunday.
Out of the total amount, €200,000 is newly allocated as part of the EU’s contribution to the IFRC’s Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF). The remaining €500,000 comes from previous funding reserves under the EU’s partnership with the IFRC. This financial support will aid approximately 650,000 people, prioritizing the most vulnerable groups such as children, women, and people with disabilities.
The EU’s aid package includes multipurpose cash assistance, allowing the most affected individuals the flexibility to purchase essential items like food, clothing, and medicines. Additionally, mobile medical teams will deliver primary healthcare services, including mental health and psychosocial support, and first aid.
Disease prevention and health promotion campaigns are also part of the aid efforts, focusing on preventing insect- and water-borne diseases by promoting safe water practices, sanitation, and hygiene—crucial measures ahead of the impending monsoon season.
Cyclone Remal struck Bangladesh on May 26, 2024, causing extensive damage and severe flooding due to nearly 48 hours of heavy rainfall. On June 3, the EU initially announced €1.2 million to provide immediate relief to the cyclone victims in Bangladesh and India.
