Petrobangla has clarified that the government currently has no plan to increase gas prices, dismissing recent media reports suggesting an imminent hike.

In a statement issued on Saturday night, the state-owned energy company said the government’s current position is that there is no immediate decision or plan to raise gas tariffs.

The clarification came after several media outlets reported that gas prices could be increased.

“Following recent news reports regarding a possible gas price hike, the government’s current position is being clarified. At this moment, there is no plan to increase gas prices,” Petrobangla said in the statement.

Earlier, amid a persistent gas shortage, Petrobangla had proposed raising gas prices for power generation and compressed natural gas (CNG) to reduce the government’s subsidy burden.

Under the proposal submitted to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the price of gas supplied to power plants would increase from Tk16 to Tk25 per cubic metre, while the CNG tariff would rise from Tk43 to nearly Tk65 per cubic metre.

However, Petrobangla’s latest statement confirms that the government has not decided to implement any gas price increase at this time.
