B Mirror Desk : Egg prices in Dhaka markets have risen over the last two weeks, with a dozen now costing Tk140-145, an increase from Tk115-120 a month prior.
Conversely, prices for broiler chicken and vegetables have decreased, providing some relief for consumers as Eid-ul-Adha approaches.During visits to kamlapur, Natun Bazar, and Badda today (23 May), it was observed that broiler chicken is being sold for Tk160-170 per kg, which is a Tk10 reduction from last week.
In addition, Sonali chicken is priced between Tk260-280 per kg. Most vegetables are available in the Tk40-50 range, with prices having dropped by Tk20 per kg compared to the previous week. Vendors indicate that the decline in poultry prices is a seasonal occurrence leading up to Eid-ul-Adha, as demand shifts towards sacrificial animals.”During the monsoon, egg production typically sees a slight decrease, which causes prices to rise,” stated Jalal Hossain, a vendor at Khilbarirtek.
“However, this year, the increase is not as significant as in past years. As farmers release more chickens in anticipation of Eid, the supply increases, leading to lower prices,” he added. Vegetables like pointed gourd (potol), okra, snake gourd (chichinga), and spiny gourd (kakrole) are priced at Tk40-50 per kg. Yard-long beans (borboti), taro stolons (kochur loti), usta, eggplant, and ridge gourd (jhinga) are available for Tk50-60 per kg.
Traders have attributed the price reduction to a plentiful supply of summer vegetables, noting that concerns about flooding in certain areas have led to early harvesting. Onions are selling for Tk55-60 per kg, potatoes for Tk20-25, local garlic for Tk120-140, and imported garlic for Tk180-240.
Rice prices have also seen a slight decrease of Tk1-2 per kg as new Boro harvests come into the market.
