Bangladesh’s capital market witnessed a mixed performance during the week ended August 20, with the market capitalisation of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) falling by Tk 3,803 crore.
According to the DSE’s weekly market report, the bourse’s market capitalisation declined 0.54% week-on-week to Tk 7,03,812 crore at the close of trading on August 20, compared with Tk 7,07,615 crore a week earlier.
All major DSE indices declined during the week. The benchmark DSEX index fell 97.83 points, or 1.66%, to close lower. The DS30 index dropped 30.21 points, or 1.38%, while the DSES index declined 21.03 points, or 1.79%.
Trading activity also weakened on the DSE. Total turnover during the week stood at Tk 4,528.55 crore, down from Tk 4,987.82 crore in the previous week, marking a decline of Tk 459.27 crore.
Average daily turnover fell by Tk 91.85 crore, or 9.21%, to Tk 905.71 crore from Tk 997.56 crore in the previous week.
A total of 384 companies and mutual funds were traded on the DSE during the week. Of them, prices of 52 securities advanced, 314 declined and 18 remained unchanged.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also witnessed declines in its major indices during the week.
The CASPI and CSCX indices fell 1.97% and 2.04%, respectively, to 15,491.43 points and 9,430.69 points.
The CSE-30 index declined 1.55% to 13,877.93 points, while the CSI dropped 2.75% to 853.68 points. The CSE-50 index fell 1.39% to 1,108.58 points.
However, trading activity on the CSE increased significantly. Total turnover rose to Tk 309.86 crore during the week from Tk 202.01 crore in the previous week, an increase of Tk 107.85 crore.
A total of 321 companies and mutual funds were traded on the CSE. Prices of 68 securities increased, 241 declined and 12 remained unchanged.
