CSE moves to establish commodity derivatives exchange

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) PLC has taken an initiative to establish a commodity derivatives exchange in Bangladesh’s capital market, describing the move as a significant milestone for the country’s financial market.

CSE Managing Director M Saifur Rahman Majumdar said the initiative was a bold step that could become a landmark development for Bangladesh’s capital market.

He made the remarks during an educational visit by around 70 students from the Department of Business Administration of East Delta University to the CSE’s Agrabad office in Chattogram.

The visit, titled “Understanding Business,” was aimed at providing students with practical knowledge of the capital market, including trading and settlement, investor protection, market surveillance and the use of technology.

Majumdar said the capital market plays an important role in the country’s economic development and stressed the need to enhance the knowledge, skills and professionalism of all stakeholders.

“CSE has always played a leading role in the development of the capital market. As part of that commitment, CSE has taken a bold initiative to establish a commodity derivatives exchange in Bangladesh’s capital market,” he said.

He also said the capital market provides opportunities not only to invest savings but also to raise fresh capital for business expansion. As the market operates under technical and regulatory frameworks, he urged students to acquire proper knowledge and prepare themselves for future roles in the sector.

Mohammad Murtuza Alam, general manager and head of the Risk Management Division at CSE, said today’s students would become future investors and leaders of the capital market.

He encouraged students to gain knowledge about market operations and conduct research from an early stage. He added that the capital market offers career opportunities not only for investors but also for entrepreneurs, consultants, trainers and planners.

A K M Quayum Chowdhury, professor of the Department of Business Administration at East Delta University, said CSE had been playing an important role in developing Bangladesh’s capital market for many years. He described the proposed commodity exchange as a recent example of the exchange’s efforts.

During the educational visit, CSE officials also briefed students on existing and upcoming capital market products, financial planning, risk management and potential investment returns. They answered various questions from the students, who expressed interest in participating in future training, workshops and awareness programmes on the capital market.
