Depositor accounts in non-bank financial institutions or finance companies have decreased by 17.43 percent in the last one year. At the same time, the loan or investment account decreased by 2.52 percent.
According to sources, since 2015, there have been major loan fraud incidents in some financial institutions. About 8 thousand crore Taka have been embezzled from the institutions. Out of this, the directors have taken 5 and a half thousand crore Taka. Some financial institutions fall into a major crisis. They could not return the money to the depositors. As a result, the depositors held protest marches and meetings. Due to this, the deposits of financial institutions were decreasing. But now the deposits have started increasing. However, the number of customers has been decreasing ever since the fraud. The number of commas still continues. Among them, the deposit account has decreased the most. Customers have withdrawn money from many financial institutions as they could not repay the deposits. Due to which deposit customers have decreased more. Credit or investment customers declined relatively less.
From the report of Bangladesh Bank, it can be seen that the total deposit account in financial institutions was 5 lakh 22 thousand in December 2022. In December last year, it decreased to 4 lakh 31 thousand. During the last one year, the deposit account has decreased by 91 thousand or 17.43 percent. Among them, personal deposit accounts have decreased the most. However, the entrepreneur’s deposit account has increased. This account is inflated as they keep deposits as opposed to borrowing from the same institution.
In December 2022, the loan or investment accounts were 2 lakh 25 thousand 392. In December last year, it decreased to 2 lakh 19 thousand 705. In the space of one year, the loan account decreased by 5 thousand 687 or 2.52 percent.
According to sources, the crisis is increasing due to the decrease in customers in financial institutions. Deposits were falling earlier. Now starting to grow. But the growth rate is very low. At the same time disbursement of new loans is very low. Due to the addition of previous interest, the debt increased very little.
From the report, it can be seen that in December 2022, deposits in financial institutions were Tk 43 thousand 753 crores. In December last year, it increased to 44 thousand 830 crores. Deposits increased by Tk 109 crore 29 lakh in one year. The growth rate is 24 percent.
The investment in December 2022 was 70 thousand 322 crores. It increased to 73 thousand 759 crores in December last year. During the discussion period, the loan increased by Tk 420 crore 76 lakh or the growth rate is 57 percent. Earlier both deposits and loans used to grow at a much higher rate. Some years it was above double digits.
During the period under discussion, private sector deposits have increased but public sector deposits have decreased. In particular, government deposits declined as government institutions did not deposit deposits with weaker financial institutions. In December 2022, government deposits were Tk 49 crore. In December last year, it decreased to Tk 42 crore. Deposits decreased by Tk. 7 crore during the period under discussion.
