B Mirror Report: The volume of non-performing loans (NPLs) in Bangladesh’s banking sector increased by Tk 31,487 crore in the three months up to March 2026 compared to December 2025.
The information was revealed in the latest report of Bangladesh Bank.
According to the central bank, the total loans and advances of 61 scheduled banks stood at around Tk 18,24,668 crore as of March 31, 2026.
Of this amount, classified loans rose to Tk 5,88,704 crore, accounting for 32.26 percent of total disbursed loans.
The latest rise indicates that the NPL ratio increased by 1.66 percentage points over the three-month period. In December last year, the ratio stood at 30.6 percent.
The report also shows significant variation across different types of banks. State-owned commercial banks accounted for Tk 1,49,784 crore in defaulted loans, representing 45.85 percent.
Private commercial banks held Tk 4,16,481 crore in non-performing loans, or 30.11 percent of their total loans.
Foreign banks reported Tk 3,262 crore in classified loans, accounting for 4.82 percent, while specialized banks recorded Tk 19,174 crore, or 40.72 percent.
