B Mirror Report: The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has described the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 as consumer-friendly but cautioned that its actual benefits for ordinary people will depend on proper implementation and effective monitoring.
In a budget reaction issued on Saturday, CAB Central Committee Vice-President SM Nazer Hossain said several measures in the proposed budget are positive for consumers, including tax reductions on 60 essential commodities, higher taxes on tobacco products, lower duties on imports of renewable energy equipment, and increased allocations for health, education and social protection.
The statement was sent to the media by CAB Information Officer Anwar Parvez.
Nazer Hossain said these initiatives could benefit consumers if their implementation is properly ensured. He stressed that effective supervision is necessary so that the advantages of tax cuts and other incentives are passed on to the public.
He noted that in the past, tax exemptions and other incentives often failed to produce the expected impact in the market. Weak monitoring led to artificial shortages and price hikes, preventing consumers from receiving the intended benefits.
The CAB leader also urged authorities to closely monitor the market to ensure that businesses do not exploit government policies or take undue advantage of incentives in ways that undermine consumer interests.
