BM Desk : The US has imposed new tariffs on Bangladeshi exports, a worrying signal for the country’s top export sector, the ready-made garment industry.
According to the new tariff structure, the tariff on Bangladeshi goods in the US has been increased from 15% to 37%. This will increase the price of Bangladeshi clothing for American buyers and make competition in the US market more challenging.
The United States is one of the largest markets for Bangladeshi manufactured garments. Every year, Bangladesh exports about $8.4 billion worth of apparel to the United States, a significant portion of total exports. A drop in exports to the US could have a major impact on Bangladesh’s overall export earnings.
Economists and industry leaders have warned that new tariffs on Bangladesh’s main export products could have a negative impact on export revenue. Bangladesh’s garment sector, a major export sector, could face significant losses due to the tariff increase. Higher tariffs would make Bangladeshi clothing more expensive for American buyers, weakening Bangladesh’s competitive position in the market. As a result, buyers may turn to alternative suppliers, which may result in a decline in export orders.
