Sammilito Islami Bank withdrawals start Sept 1

Customers of Sammilito Islami Bank will be able to withdraw money from their accounts according to their needs from September 1, Bangladesh Bank has said.

The central bank also clarified that no “haircut” or deduction will be imposed on the profits earned on depositors’ funds. The bank has been instructed to communicate the decision clearly to all customers.

The decisions were made at a meeting on Tuesday between Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostaqur Rahman and Sammilito Islami Bank Chairman Kazi Shairul Hasan and Managing Director Abedur Rahman Sikder.

According to Bangladesh Bank, the process of returning depositors’ funds has been continuing under the scheme announced on December 29, 2025. To reduce customer hardship and allow depositors to meet urgent financial needs, the new withdrawal facility will take effect from September 1.

Under the facility, individual depositors will be able to withdraw the principal amount from Al-Wadiah current accounts, Mudaraba savings accounts and Mudaraba term deposits as needed. The withdrawals will be allowed beyond the restrictions applicable under the ongoing deposit repayment scheme.

The central bank has instructed Sammilito Islami Bank to complete all necessary preparations before introducing the facility.

Bangladesh Bank also directed the bank to remove confusion among customers regarding deposit profits. It said no portion of depositors’ profits would be deducted as a “haircut.”

Finance Minister had earlier announced in Parliament that no amount would be deducted from depositors’ profits. However, uncertainty over the issue remained among some customers.

Governor Mostaqur Rahman instructed the bank’s management to promptly and clearly inform all depositors that their profits would not be subject to any deduction.

The central bank also directed the country’s largest and only government-owned Islamic bank, which began operations with capital of around Tk 35,000 crore, to return to normal banking operations as quickly as possible.

The meeting emphasized taking necessary steps to resume all regular banking activities of the institution at the earliest.

Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governors Dr Md Habibur Rahman, Dr Kabir Ahmed, Sarwar Hossain and Anisur Rahman, along with senior central bank officials, attended the meeting.
