B Mirror Report : Discussion took place at the relevant United Nations committee regarding the Bangladeshi government’s request to postpone the country’s graduation from the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
A meeting was held on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York under the Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism (EMM) framework of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP). The committee will evaluate Bangladesh’s request and make a decision later.
When contacted, CDP member and EMM chair, Bangladeshi economist Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, told media from New York that the receipt of the letter has been acknowledged, and the process for evaluating the issues raised by the government will be communicated. It may take several weeks to get the CDP’s decision. After that, the matter will go to the Economic and Social Council and later be presented to the General Assembly.
When asked whether the CDP would recommend postponing Bangladesh’s LDC graduation following the government’s request, Dr. Debapriya said that nothing can be said on the matter until the review process of the application is completed.
On Wednesday, the Bangladeshi government requested the UN committee to defer the country’s graduation from the LDC category by three years.
