Tuku pledges sustainable embankment for Erosion-hit Tangail

Tangail Correspondent: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, MP, has said the government will soon take effective measures to construct a planned and sustainable embankment to protect erosion-prone areas along the Jamuna River in Tangail.

The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalist after inspecting the river erosion-hit section of the Bhuyapur–Tarakandi road in the Shakharia area near Nalin Bazar in Gopalpur Upazila on Friday afternoon.

During the visit, Tuku said the authorities had already placed more than 25,000 geo bags along with large tube geo bags to curb the erosion. He noted that these emergency measures have brought the riverbank erosion under temporary control.

The inspection followed severe erosion caused by the strong current of the Jamuna River in Shakharia, which led to the collapse of a section of the Dhaka–Tangail Bhuyapur Tarakandi regional highway. As a result, vehicular movement on the road has been completely suspended.

The government is now planning a long-term embankment project to safeguard the road and nearby communities from future river erosion, the minister added.
