The World Bank is worried about Bangladesh’s economy

The recent political unrest in the country has intensified that crisis. According to a report by the World Bank, it is possible to create an opportunity to turn around the economy through comprehensive reforms in the revenue collection system, diversification of export products, proper implementation of social protection programs, increased investment in infrastructure development and employment creation.

Indermit Gill, senior vice president of the World Bank, said that the economy of Bangladesh is in a critical state. He advised the government’s policy makers to take quick and effective measures to restore the economy’s momentum. According to him, the Bangladesh government has already taken some initiatives to control inflation and increase revenue. However, more urgent steps are needed to deal with the crisis. The report also said that the main sector of Bangladesh’s foreign trade is the garment industry. But the economic recession in Europe and North America has reduced demand for clothing, which risks reducing export earnings.

In October, the IMF said in a report that Bangladesh’s economic growth could fall to 4 percent due to political instability. The World Bank also agreed with them and said that this growth rate could be 4.1 percent.
