Sugar Imports Suspended, Domestic Stock Prioritized– Adviser

Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries, Housing, and Public Works of the caretaker government, has stated that import of sugar from abroad has been temporarily suspended, and sugar produced in the country’s mills will be sold first. He made the remarks on Saturday morning while inspecting the progress of development and renovation work at Natore Uttara Ganabhaban.

Regarding sugar, the Industries Adviser said, “Importing sugar from abroad is temporarily halted because we are first selling the stock of sugar produced in our domestic mills through the TCB. This process is ongoing. Sugar does not yield profits quickly. Our mills were built during the British era, and we can meet only a small portion of the country’s demand locally. The government is considering production not only of sugar but also of other related products.”

He further added, “It is not feasible to run sugar mills purely on subsidies, though we are trying. Therefore, good news is expected either during our tenure or in the next government. We are more interested in supporting domestic entrepreneurs.”

Adilur Rahman Khan, also Adviser to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, said, “Our task is to keep Uttara Ganabhaban prepared. There is no fixed schedule for meetings; usually, each government holds at least one, sometimes more. This Ganabhaban had been neglected for a long time, and we have restored it.”

The inspection was attended by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, Akand Mohammad Faisal Uddin, Natore Deputy Commissioner Asma Shaheen, Police Superintendent Mohammad Abdul Wahab, and officials from various departments.
