Spot LNG Cargo Arrives to Ease Gas Shortage

B Mirror Report : Bangladesh has received a liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from the international spot market to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to industries and power plants.

The cargo, supplied by Singapore-based BP Singapore Private Limited, arrived at the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) operated by Excelerate Energy Limited at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar on December 28, 2025. The government spent around Tk 490 crore to import the shipment.

Engineer Muhammad Nasir Uddin, Deputy General Manager (LNG) of Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), confirmed the arrival and said the LNG would help mitigate the ongoing gas shortage during the month.

According to the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement, the total cost of the cargo, including VAT and taxes, amounted to Tk 489.88 crore. This was the 49th LNG cargo imported from the spot market in 2025.

Engineer KM Zahirul Islam, another Deputy General Manager of RPGCL, said this was the final LNG shipment of the year, adding that spot LNG imports would continue in 2026 under revised targets.

He said the government regularly imports LNG from the spot market to maintain stable gas supply for industrial and power generation sectors. On average, 8–9 LNG cargoes are imported each month to meet domestic demand.

According to the Energy Department, international bids were invited on November 10, 2025, under the Master Sale and Purchase Agreement (MSPA). Four global companies submitted offers, with BP Singapore Private Limited emerging as the lowest bidder at US$11.64 per MMBTU.

The shipment volume was 3.36 million MMBTU, with a base cost of US$39.11 million. Based on the exchange rate of November 16, 2025, the cost stood at Tk 480.27 crore. After adding a two percent advance income tax, the final cost rose to around Tk 490 crore.

Energy officials said the price aligns with the prevailing international JKM LNG index and is lower than the prices of the three previous spot LNG cargoes imported this year.

This was the first LNG supply to Bangladesh by BP Singapore Private Limited. Petrobangla said the company has the financial capacity to independently finance the shipment.

Bangladesh currently imports 56 LNG cargoes annually under long-term contracts with Qatar and Oman, while additional spot purchases are made to meet rising demand and support industrial production.
