PR Voting System Not Suitable for Bangladesh, Says Kalim Uddin Milon

– Md. Moshfiqul Rahman Swapon, Sunamganj Correspondent:

In a political display in Chhatak, Sunamganj, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated wings launched a large-scale leaflet distribution campaign on Wednesday, aimed at raising awareness of the party’s proposed 31-point reform agenda for restructuring the state.

The campaign, which swept through the streets of Chhatak Municipality with a massive show of support, was led by BNP’s central Assistant Organizing Secretary and former MP, Kalim Uddin Ahmed Milon, who also serves as the convenor of the Sunamganj District BNP.

Following the distribution of nearly 25,000 leaflets, a rally was held at the town’s busy traffic point. Addressing party workers and local residents, Milon emphasized the significance of reaching every household with BNP’s message.

“Today, alongside our leaders and activists, we have distributed the vision set forth by our Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, to the people of Chhatak and its surrounding areas. The public’s enthusiasm gives us hope — we believe the sheaf of paddy (BNP’s election symbol) will win in both Chhatak and Dowarabazar,” he said.

Milon further announced that BNP will deliver its message to every corner of the region over the next two weeks. “InshAllah, within the next 15 days, we will ensure our message reaches every single home,” he affirmed.

Speaking to journalists before the rally, the senior BNP leader expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects across Sunamganj. “We will carry our message to every home in all five constituencies of Sunamganj. We are confident that the sheaf of paddy will win in all five seats.”

On the issue of the Proportional Representation (PR) system, Milon was clear in his stance. “We do not believe the PR system is suitable for Bangladesh,” he stated, without elaborating further.

When asked about the presence of multiple potential candidates within BNP, Milon responded, “Ours is a large and democratic party. Naturally, there will be many aspiring candidates. But our high command is carefully reviewing everything. InshAllah, the right decisions will come at the right time.”

The event saw enthusiastic participation from local units of BNP and its affiliated organizations, including the Jubo Dal, Krishak Dal, Shramik Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Chhatra Dal, and JASAS. Together, they brought energy and momentum to what appears to be the early stages of BNP’s campaign trail ahead of the anticipated national elections, which Milon believes will be held before Ramadan next year.

As BNP ramps up its grassroots outreach, Wednesday’s event in Chhatak marks a clear signal of the party’s intent to reassert its presence and message ahead of the upcoming political showdown.
