Power generation Halts of Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant

BM Desk : Power generation at the 525 MW Barapukuria coal-based thermal power plant in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, has ceased due to a surveyor’s error at the 275 MW third unit.
This facility, which shut down on Monday morning, July 21, produced 160 to 165 MW of electricity that was delivered to the national grid every day. Every day 1,600 tons of coal were needed for this. Power load shedding has affected eight northern districts, including Parbatipur upazila, as a result of the third unit’s shutdown.

Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique, Chief Engineer of the 525 MW Barapukuria coal-based thermal power plant, revealed that power output from the 275 MW third unit has been stopped since Monday morning. Currently, the plant’s 125 MW Unit 1 generates 50–55 MW of power for the national grid. To run, Unit 1 needs 800 tons of coal every day.
On the other hand, the second unit of the 125 MW Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant has been closed for 4 years and 8 months due to renovations that began in November 2020. Although Unit 2 has a 125 MW capacity, it used to produce 65–70 MW. Approximately 5,200 tons of coal are needed daily to keep the thermal power plant’s three thermal power units operating.

But up until now, running all three units at once has never been feasible. At the moment, the Barapukuria Coal Mine’s coal yard holds 390,000 tons of coal. The Barapukuria Coal Mine provides the coal needed by the 525 MW Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant. Because the 1305 stages of coal deposits have been depleted, coal mining in Barapukuria has been halted since June 23. The third unit of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant is now undergoing repairs, according to Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Chief Engineer.

The third unit of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant is now undergoing repairs, according to Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Chief Engineer. A surveyor error resulted in the shutdown of the 275 MW third unit. The plant’s 125 MW unit is simultaneously supplying 50–55 MW of power to the national grid. When the third unit is put into service, it is anticipated that the amount of load shedding in the area would be significantly decreased. It is hoped that on Tuesday, July 22, the third unit will begin producing electricity.
