PM to visit Malaysia and China on six-day state tour

B Mirror Report : Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will embark on a six-day state visit to Malaysia and China beginning Sunday, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy and other key sectors.

The Prime Minister will leave Dhaka for Kuala Lumpur on June 21 and travel directly to China from Malaysia on June 22, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said at a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.

According to the Foreign Secretary, Prime Minister Rahman has maintained regular engagement with foreign leaders since assuming office, and the upcoming visits are part of the government’s broader diplomatic outreach. He will visit Malaysia from June 21-22 and China from June 23-26.

During his stay in Malaysia, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on June 22. The two leaders will also lead high-level bilateral talks between their respective delegations.

The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, energy, the halal economy, the semiconductor industry, agriculture, education and people-to-people connectivity.

The Foreign Secretary said Bangladesh will also seek Malaysia’s support for recruiting more Bangladeshi workers in various sectors, its interest in becoming an ASEAN member, and efforts to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

Regarding possible agreements during the visit, Asad Alam Siam said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation is expected to be signed. Discussions are also underway on exchanging the Terms of Reference (ToR) for initiating commercial negotiations and several other bilateral cooperation documents.
