Prime Minister Tarek Rahman will visit Dhaka Medical College (DMC) and Hospital on Saturday, July 11, to mark the institution’s 80th anniversary.
During the visit, the prime minister will lay the foundation stones for two female dormitories under the Directorate General of Medical Education’s “20 Hostel Project.” He will also take part in a tree plantation programme and address a discussion marking the anniversary.
The prime minister’s spouse, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, a former student of Dhaka Medical College, is also expected to attend the programme.
Extensive preparations are underway across the DMC campus ahead of the visit, with current and former students describing the celebration as a reunion of the DMC community.
Students expressed hope that the prime minister’s visit would lead to effective initiatives to address long-standing academic and infrastructure challenges at the college and hospital. They said the visit would further inspire teachers, students, physicians and staff, while the presence of alumna Dr. Zubaida Rahman would add special significance to the event.
Several former student leaders also welcomed the visit, saying Dhaka Medical College has played a vital role in the country’s healthcare system and in many important moments of national history. They expressed optimism that the visit would accelerate improvements in medical education, healthcare services, research and campus infrastructure.
Fifth-year MBBS student Md. Sakibul Hasan said the visit would provide an opportunity to directly present the healthcare sector’s challenges and prospects to the prime minister.
Established on July 10, 1946, Dhaka Medical College is one of Bangladesh’s oldest and leading public medical institutions. In addition to its five-year MBBS programme, the college offers postgraduate education in various branches of medical science.
