Plastic exporters explore EU market with BSI seminar

BM Report

The Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) partnered with the British Standards Institution (BSI) on Tuesday to host a seminar titled “CE to Enhance the Export Possibilities of Plastic Goods.” Held at the BPGMEA conference room in Dhaka, the seminar addressed key issues and strategies for Bangladeshi plastic product exporters aiming to enter the UK and European markets.

Dr. Jane Gilbert, a circular economy expert from BSI, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the crucial role of a national action plan on the circular economy in achieving sustainable development goals. She emphasized the need to prioritize waste management, minimize plastic pollution, and promote sustainable plastic production and consumption.

“Transitioning to a circular economy requires a systemic change,” Dr. Gilbert stressed.  “The global economy’s circularity rate is only 7.2% and declining. The plastic industry, however, offers promise with significant domestic market growth potential and opportunities to capture a share of the global market.”

With Bangladesh’s graduation from Least Developed Country status expected in 2026, Dr. Gilbert emphasized the importance of adopting international standards for goods and services to maintain export competitiveness.

BPGMEA President Shamim Ahmed acknowledged the rising plastic consumption alongside national development. He called for innovation and proper plastic waste management to mitigate environmental concerns.

“Investment and infrastructure development are crucial for effective waste management,” Mr. Ahmed said, commending the government’s initiatives towards a circular economy in Bangladesh. “Currently, 37% of mismanaged plastic is being recycled domestically, and this needs further strengthening.”

The seminar featured presentations from BPGMEA officials and industry experts, including representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industries, and leading Bangladeshi companies. Discussions focused on the challenges and opportunities facing Bangladeshi plastic exporters, including economic development, trade policies, sustainable growth strategies, capacity building initiatives, and export development.

The BPGMEA-BSI seminar provided valuable insights for Bangladeshi plastic manufacturers aiming to tap into the European market by meeting international regulatory standards and adopting sustainable practices.
