No meeting with NBR protesters today: Financial Advisor

There will be no Sunday meeting with the irate NBR officials, according to Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed. The officials should observe the shutdown program if they so choose, he said.
On Sunday afternoon, June 29, the Finance Advisor made this statement in answer to a query from reporters at the Finance Ministry. The agitation of NBR officials was a topic of discussion in today’s Advisory Council meeting, according to the Finance Advisor. There will be a news release about this.

According to sources in the Finance Ministry, the Advisory Council opted not to meet with the irate NBR staff. A decision regarding the meeting with them will be made later, according to the finance advisor.

NBR sources, meantime, stated at 2:00 PM today that the Finance Advisor will meet with the irate NBR officials and staff at 4:00 PM today. The Finance Advisor’s office will be the location of the meeting. The delegation of 20 representatives from the VAT, Customs, and Income Tax cadres has been finalized for this purpose. The president of the NBR Reform Unity Council, Hasan Muhammad Tarek Rikabder, will serve as its leader.
For a few days, NBR staff and officials have been demonstrating for logical changes in the revenue sector that take into account the views of all stakeholders. Today and Sunday, they are also following a full shutdown program, just like they did yesterday. This demonstration is being held under the NBR Reform Council’s auspices.
