Laldighirpara Market to host evicted hawkers – DC

Nurul Amin Sylhet Correspondent: Preparation work is progressing at the Laldighirpara Hawkers Market in Sylhet as the district administration revives an old project aimed at rehabilitating hawkers. The newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC), Md. Sarwar Alam, has taken the initiative to relocate evicted hawkers from sidewalks and highways into this designated market.

Recently, hawkers were evicted from the top of the historic Kinbridge. To address their resettlement, the temporary hawkers’ market at Laldighirpara is being readied. Work on the site began a week ago, and officials say it will take around 10–12 more days to complete.

On Tuesday afternoon, at around 3:15 pm, DC Sarwar Alam inspected the preparation work at the site. Speaking to reporters during the visit, he said:

“The development of the Hawkers’ Market is progressing. Once it is ready, no hawker will be allowed to occupy sidewalks or roads in the city. We will launch an eviction drive immediately after the work is completed.”

He further said that the rehabilitated market will be able to accommodate a large number of hawkers, urging them to move there once it opens. Hawkers and small traders across Sylhet have already been warned not to return to encroaching on public spaces.

The DC was accompanied during the inspection by Sylhet City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Reza-e Rafin Sarkar, along with senior officials from the district administration and the city corporation.
