Govt eyes Tk 500,000 tax-free income limit

The government is planning to raise the tax-free income threshold for individual taxpayers to Tk 500,000 in phases over the coming years and is also considering withdrawing the proposed requirement to submit a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) to open a bank account.

According to Finance Ministry sources, the proposed changes are being considered ahead of the passage of the Finance Bill 2026, following objections from businesses and other stakeholders.

Under the revised plan, the tax-free income threshold could be increased to Tk 400,000 in fiscal years 2026-27 and 2027-28, raised to Tk 450,000 in 2028-29 and 2029-30, and finally to Tk 500,000 in 2030-31. The proposed budget had earlier suggested increasing the threshold from Tk 350,000 to Tk 375,000.

The government is also reviewing its proposal to make TIN mandatory for opening bank accounts, amid concerns that the measure could discourage low-income people from accessing formal banking services.

Other possible revisions include reducing the proposed 15% capital gains tax on gold to 5% and lowering the tax rate for private universities and private medical, dental, engineering, and IT institutions from 10% to 5%. However, no changes are expected to the proposed tax measures for the real estate sector.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the national budget for FY2026-27 and the Finance Bill in Parliament on June 11.
