Govt to Consider Major Imports of Urea and Soybean Oil Tomorrow

B Mirror Report :  The government is likely to consider proposals for importing 30,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer and over 2.71 crore liters of refined soybean oil to meet growing domestic demand. The Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase is scheduled to meet tomorrow at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Finance and Science and Technology Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

The committee will review a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce to procure soybean oil from the international market through the Direct Procurement Method (DPM), aiming to ensure adequate supply and stabilize the edible oil market ahead of Ramadan. It will also discuss a proposal from the Ministry of Industries to import urea fertilizer from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) under the 11th lot for the current fiscal year.

In addition to these major imports, the meeting is expected to consider several other procurement and infrastructure projects. These include construction of fertilizer buffer warehouses in Faridpur and Gaibandha, procurement of riverine patrol vessels and high-speed boats for the Bangladesh Coast Guard, and proposals related to road safety and connectivity improvements.

The committee will also discuss hiring a UN agency for the FDMN education project in Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, and Bhasanchar under the World Bank-supported ISO Component-01 project. Other proposals include construction of additional fertilizer godowns under the national buffer warehouse project to strengthen fertilizer storage and distribution.

The meeting reflects the government’s efforts to ensure essential supplies, improve infrastructure, and strengthen public service delivery ahead of upcoming demands.
