B Mirror Report: Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that the government holds sufficient food reserves to ensure the prices of essential commodities remain stable throughout Ramadan.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Friday. The minister noted that maintaining price stability is one of the core duties of the Commerce Ministry, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
“One of the main responsibilities of the Commerce Ministry is to keep the prices of essential food items under control. This duty becomes even more significant during Ramadan,” he said.
Muktadir acknowledged that the government had limited time to undertake special preparations before Ramadan after assuming office. “However, the positive side is that we have adequate food stocks, which will help us maintain stability in the market,” he added.
Following an exchange of greetings with local officials and party leaders, the minister also highlighted development priorities for Sylhet. He stressed the need for employment generation, expansion of IT-based jobs and the establishment of an artificial intelligence (AI) centre in the region.
“To create jobs, we need investment. To attract investment, we must enhance connectivity, reduce bureaucratic complications and ensure political stability,” he said.
He further mentioned that special policy incentives would be required to encourage both expatriate and local investors to invest in Sylhet.
“We are working on these matters, and visible progress will be seen soon,” he added.
Referring to growing global competition, the minister said neighbouring countries have undertaken significant digital initiatives, including AI training programmes for government officials.
“If we fall behind, we will lose out in global competition. We must strengthen our capabilities accordingly,” he said, adding that the government aims to reinforce Bangladesh’s global position over the next five years.
Local lawmakers, senior civil and police administration officials, and leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party were present during the minister’s visit.
