B Mirror Report: The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has withdrawn the recently increased electricity tariff for residential lifeline consumers using up to 75 units, keeping the previous rate unchanged for this category.
The decision was announced in a notice issued on Thursday afternoon (4 June).
Earlier, the Power Division had requested BERC to reconsider the revised tariff structure. Following exchanges of letters and a review of the issue, the commission decided to roll back the increase for low-consumption households.
According to the notice, BERC had recently revised wholesale, transmission and retail electricity tariffs after a public hearing based on proposals from power distribution companies. However, the revised structure did not fully reflect the Power Division’s proposal for lifeline consumers.
Officials said the increase could have added financial pressure on low-income and lower-middle-income households, prompting concerns from the Power Division, which asked for a review in line with government policy.
As a result, lifeline consumers using up to 75 units of electricity per month will continue to pay the previous tariff rate.
