The government has appointed Arif Ahmed Khan, Additional Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), as the administrator of Nassa Group to oversee and complete the payment of outstanding wages to the group’s workers.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment announced the decision today through an official circular.
The move comes after months of unpaid wages for workers at Nassa Group, a major player in Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector. The company, which employs over 30,000 workers, has been struggling financially since its owner, Nazrul Islam Mazumder, was jailed earlier this year.
Due to the situation, factory operations have remained largely suspended, and workers have continued to demand their overdue salaries. The group’s financial troubles have deepened, with media reports suggesting that bank loan defaults have crossed several thousand crores of taka.
Once a major conglomerate with investments spanning textiles, garments, banking, and real estate, Nassa Group has been effectively paralyzed since a political transition in August 2024. Its textile and garment operations, in particular, have come under heavy strain, leaving thousands of families in uncertainty.
The appointment of an administrator is expected to bring some relief to the workers, though the roadmap for full payment and possible reopening of factories remains unclear.
