FBCCI calls for automation and logistics improvement to boost e-commerce

BM Report:

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) emphasized the need for automation and improved logistics infrastructure to ensure the sustainable development of the country’s e-commerce sector.

These concerns were raised during the first meeting of the FBCCI Standing Committee on Global E-commerce held on Sunday. Entrepreneurs highlighted various challenges they face, including- Lack of automation: Manual processes in customs, the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and other relevant departments create bottlenecks and hinder smooth operations.

Also includes difficulties in cross-border trade. Complexities and unresolved issues related to online cross-border business transactions restrict growth opportunities. Inefficient logistics services pose challenges in timely and cost-effective delivery of goods.

FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam acknowledged the challenges but stressed the importance of e-commerce for Bangladesh’s economic growth. He urged for proper policies, including automation of government processes and streamlined tax procedures, to facilitate the sector’s development.

FBCCI Director BM Shoaib emphasized the need to prioritize selling and branding local products through e-commerce platforms alongside foreign goods.

FBCCI Panel Advisor Syed Sadat Alam Kabir suggested discussions with relevant stakeholders, such as the Logistics or Courier Service Association, to formulate effective guidelines for the sector.

The meeting also discussed the importance of market research and establishing an international hub for logistics facilities to support e-commerce growth.

The FBCCI’s initiative highlights the growing importance of e-commerce in Bangladesh and underlines the need for collaborative efforts from both the public and private sectors to address existing challenges and pave the way for sustainable growth in this dynamic industry.
