Bangladesh Bank has released the actual export data for the fiscal year 2022-23 and 2023-24. Exports in 2023-24 fell by 5.90 percent to $40.81 billion compared to the previous fiscal year. Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), a government body, has released export data for the last month till last May. The company showed exports of 107.10 billion dollars in 23 months. Actually exports are 80.70 billion dollars. This means that the export in 23 months is shown to be more than 26.40 billion dollars.
Under pressure from the IMF, Bangladesh Bank started publishing monthly actual export data last April. There is a large discrepancy between EPB data and actual exports. In the face of controversy, the organization held a meeting with various organizations. EPB has since stopped publishing export data. Usually the company publishes the information in the week following the end of each month. EPB has not yet released the data for June as the month of August is coming to an end after July.
According to the data of Bangladesh Bank, in the fiscal year 2023-24, the export was 4 thousand 81 million dollars. Actual exports for the fiscal year 2022-23 were $4,336 million. This means that last fiscal year exports decreased by 255 million dollars or 5.90 percent. EPB showed exports of $5,556 million in FY 2022-23. This means that EPB was overstated by $12.20 billion. The company had shown exports of $5,154 million till May of the last financial year. In fact, the exports till last May were 3 thousand 734 million dollars. This means an excess of 14.20 billion dollars has been shown in the last 11 months of the fiscal year.
Bangladesh Bank officials said that until now the same export was being calculated multiple times, the shipment was canceled but it was not removed from the list of exports, exports were being shown higher in various ways. After that all accounts of foreign exchange balance have been turned upside down.
