B Mirror Desk: A transformative phase is set to commence in Dhaka’s public transport sector. If everything proceeds as planned, electric buses will soon be introduced to promote sustainable and modern urban transportation. The estimated cost for this initiative is Tk 2500 crore.
Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, an advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as well as Youth and Sports in the interim government, shared this update. He announced the news via a post on his verified Facebook page on the evening of May 16.
According to Asif Mahmud, electric buses will operate in Dhaka, with project work commencing on July 1. This government initiative aims to address the public transport challenges faced by the city. Reports indicate that 400 buses will be procured for this project, which will also include the establishment of three charging depots.
The project is expected to be completed by 2030, with the World Bank contributing Tk 2,135 crore and the government providing Tk 375 crore. This initiative will offer city residents modern, efficient, and eco-friendly public transportation options, anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion and pollution while significantly enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
