East West University (EWU) celebrated its 23rd convocation on Wednesday at Aftabnagar Sports Ground in Dhaka. Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, representing the President, awarded degrees to 2,861 undergraduate and graduate students. Four exceptional students received gold medals.
Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, EWU’s Chief Adviser and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, highlighted the university’s contributions to higher education and urged the government to allow MPhil and PhD programs. Minister Chowdhoury responded by stating the government’s non-discriminatory stance towards public and private universities. He acknowledged EWU’s achievements and declared the time ripe for such institutions to offer PhD and MPhil degrees. He emphasized the importance of universities producing graduates equipped with values, soft skills, and global-workplace-ready knowledge. He also mentioned government initiatives to enhance future graduates’ employment opportunities.
Professor Alan McKinnon from Kühne Logistics University, Germany, delivered the convocation speech. He addressed the issue of “climate injustice” faced by countries like Bangladesh and stressed the need for graduates to possess skills in supply chain management to tackle global environmental challenges.
Syed Manzur Elahi, Chairperson of EWU’s Board of Trustees and former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, and Professor Shams Rahman, EWU Vice Chancellor, also delivered insightful speeches during the event.
Other attendees included Board of Trustees members, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Treasurer, Deans, faculty members, staff, graduates, and their parents. The ceremony marked a joyous occasion for students receiving their degrees on schedule.
