B Mirror Report: Credit card transactions have increased both domestically and internationally. According to the latest report of Bangladesh Bank, credit card usage rose significantly in October compared to September within the country, by Bangladeshis abroad, and by foreigners staying in Bangladesh.
As per the central bank’s data, Bangladeshi cardholders spent BDT 4,940.2 million abroad using credit cards in September this year. In October, the amount rose to BDT 5,340.2 million. That means overseas credit card transactions increased by nearly BDT 400 million within a month.
The report shows that in October, the United States topped the list in terms of credit card spending by Bangladeshis abroad, with expenses of BDT 726 million. This was followed by Thailand with BDT 563 million, the United Kingdom with BDT 522 million, Singapore with BDT 452 million, Malaysia with BDT 450 million, Saudi Arabia with BDT 310 million, India with BDT 326 million, the Netherlands with BDT 230 million, Canada with BDT 200 million, the United Arab Emirates with BDT 190 million, China with BDT 189 million, Australia with BDT 170 million, and other countries combined accounting for BDT 990 million.
Meanwhile, domestic credit card transactions have also increased. In September, credit card spending within the country stood at BDT 33,950 million. In October, it rose to BDT 34,710 million. As a result, domestic credit card spending increased by BDT 760 million in a single month.
According to Bangladesh Bank, this upward trend overall indicates growth in consumer spending and increased momentum in international transactions.
