Joint initiatives are ongoing to support struggling banks: Governor

B Mirror Desk : Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, indicated that the interim government is contemplating intervention in the nation’s struggling banks. To enhance the banking sector, there may be a move to nationalize underperforming public and commercial banks. Additionally, the government might consider restructuring these banks with fresh capital if deemed necessary. He made these remarks during a meeting with expatriates in Dubai on the evening of May 15, which was co-hosted by Janata Bank and Islami Bank.

During his visit to the UAE, the Governor also met with senior officials from various banks in the region. Ahsan H. Mansur assured that the previous ownership of the struggling banks would be altered, emphasizing that intervention and restructuring would take place without any loss to depositors. He reassured that depositors need not worry, as their interests will be safeguarded. Concerning the significant issue of money laundering abroad, the Governor noted that international cooperation is essential to apprehend those involved.

Ongoing discussions with representatives from various countries aim to recover the assets of money launderers. At the meeting, Bangladesh’s Ambassador Tarek Ahmed praised UAE expatriates for sending the highest remittances in recent years compared to other Middle Eastern nations. Consul General Md. Rasheduzzaman highlighted the need to lower fees to encourage ordinary workers to remit more funds through legal channels.

During the event, Janata Bank Chairman M Fazlur Rahman announced the opening of 13 new Janata Bank booths across different Emirates. The gathering, chaired by Janata Bank UAE CEO Mohammad Kamruzzaman, also saw the participation of Islami Bank Chairman Mohammad Khurshid Wahab, Janata Bank Managing Director Mujibur Rahman, and Islami Bank Managing Director Omar Farooq Khan, among others.
