China is prepared to provide technical and financial assistance for the implementation of Bangladesh’s Teesta Mega Project, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said on Saturday, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to deepening long-term cooperation with Dhaka.
Speaking as a special guest at a seminar organized by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, Yao said bilateral ties are currently at one of the strongest points in history. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the event as the chief guest.
The ambassador said recent high-level exchanges between the two countries have further strengthened their strategic partnership, adding that China is ready to support Bangladesh in key areas including development, trade, infrastructure, connectivity, and regional stability.
On the Teesta Mega Project, Yao said the feasibility study is progressing rapidly and that China stands ready to provide the technical and financial support required for its implementation. He said the project would significantly improve water management, boost agricultural production, and enhance environmental protection in Bangladesh’s northern region.
Highlighting trade cooperation, Yao noted that during the Bangladeshi prime minister’s recent visit to China, the two countries signed an agreement allowing the export of fresh jackfruit to the Chinese market. Along with mangoes, Bangladesh’s national fruit is expected to gain access to China’s vast consumer market, creating new opportunities for the country’s agricultural sector.
The ambassador also said China is actively considering introducing high-speed rail technology in Bangladesh alongside the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM) initiative. He expressed hope that high-speed train services could eventually operate on key routes, including the Dhaka-Chattogram corridor.
Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Yao said Myanmar’s current political situation has created new opportunities for dialogue. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to facilitating talks between Bangladesh and Myanmar and continuing its mediation efforts to support the safe, voluntary, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
