BEA conference canceled due to conflict between two groups

The Ad Hoc Committee of the Bangladesh Economic Association was unable to hold a press conference. The convening committee’s obstruction caused the conference to be postponed. Later, on the ground floor of the office, Syed Mahbub-e-Jamil, the general secretary of the Ad Hoc Committee, addressed reporters. Attending the press conference were other organization leaders.

On Monday, a press conference was held at the Bangladesh Economic Association office with the title “Releasing office occupation and exposing those destroying the banking sector through money laundering abroad and defaulted loans.” More police have been sent to the scene in order to prevent any undesirable circumstances.

Syed Mahbub-e-Jamil said that the organization established in 1955 has been working on social development and human rights for a long time. However, the need for change has arisen due to the recent controversy over the activities of the committee. He mentioned that questions have been raised about the transparency of the elections held on May 18 and a demand for a re-evaluation has been made.

Meanwhile, Ad Hoc Committee President Professor Dr. Md. Azizur Rahman said that activities have been conducted on the basis of a new organizational structure since November 9. He also said that although the office was vacated on February 12, some outside members of the Chhatra League entered the office on Monday morning and beat up its members and threw them out.

Syed Mahbub-e-Jamil claimed that the elections were held in a disorganized fashion, disregarding the constitution of the organization. He claimed that it was unprecedented for the elections to take place on May 18, the day after the nominations were filed on May 17.

He stated that impartial leadership will be established to properly organize the organization going forward and demanded fair elections for the organization’s transparency and equitable management.
