B Mirror Report: Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will extend budgetary support to Bangladesh alongside assisting in energy, climate and infrastructure development projects.
He made the remarks while briefing reporters after a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and an AIIB delegation at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
The finance minister said discussions focused on strengthening cooperation with AIIB to face the ongoing global and domestic energy crisis, which continues to put pressure on economies, including Bangladesh.
He confirmed that the AIIB has agreed in principle to provide budget support to help the government manage fiscal challenges arising from the energy situation.
Chowdhury added that the bank will also support climate-related initiatives, particularly in solar energy, electric vehicles and other green projects aimed at promoting sustainable development.
Highlighting the government’s energy strategy, he noted that increasing solar power generation to around 20–30 per cent of total electricity output could significantly ease the country’s energy crisis. AIIB has expressed its willingness to assist Bangladesh in achieving this target.
In addition to energy and climate financing, the multilateral lender will also extend support for various infrastructure projects to accelerate economic growth.
The meeting underscored Bangladesh’s efforts to deepen engagement with international development partners to address immediate challenges while advancing long-term development goals.
