Stocks fall on week’s first trading day turnover rises slightly

B Mirror Report: On the first trading day of the week, Sunday (April 19), most shares and units on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) witnessed price declines, leading to a drop in the main and Shariah indices. However, gains in several large-cap companies pushed the DS30 index slightly upward, while overall market turnover recorded a modest increase.

Market analysis shows that trading at the DSE began on a positive note at 10:00 am, with most securities posting gains during the initial hours. By mid-session, however, selling pressure gradually increased, and by the end of the day, declining stocks significantly outnumbered advancers.

At the end of the session, shares and units of 404 companies were traded. Among them, 125 advanced, 223 declined, and 56 remained unchanged.

Due to the broader downturn, the DSE Broad Index (DSEX) fell by 9 points to close at 5,248 points. The Shariah-based index (DSES) dropped 4 points to 1,062 points, while the blue-chip index DS30 edged up slightly by 0.08 points to 1,990 points.

Total turnover at the DSE stood at Tk 819.20 crore, compared to Tk 806.15 crore in the previous trading session, reflecting an increase of Tk 13.05 crore.

Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed lower. Its overall index, CASPI, fell by 10 points to 14,752 points.

At the CSE, out of 198 traded issues, 58 advanced, 108 declined, and 32 remained unchanged. Total turnover stood at Tk 41.19 crore, up from Tk 31.43 crore in the previous session.
