Rajbari municipal roads in disrepair; residents suffer amid waterlogging

Nazrul Rajbari District Correspondent: The roads of Rajbari Municipality have been left in a state of disrepair for a long time. Water has accumulated knee-deep in various roads due to continuous rain. As a result, citizens are facing extreme hardship.

On Sunday afternoon, it was seen on the spot that the entire road from Rajbari Public Health to Railway Gate No. 2 is in a poor condition. Water has accumulated in various places due to large potholes on the road. The road has become unusable due to continuous rain for several days. Although this road is an important road, there is no effective step to repair it. The road adjacent to the District Social Service Officer’s office is knee-deep in water. People in that area are facing extreme hardship while moving.

It is reported that the road from Public Health intersection in Sajjankanda area of Rajbari Municipality to Railway Gate No. 2 is 1,675 meters long. As heavy vehicles and trucks loaded with goods are stopped from plying on the main road, trucks and heavy goods vehicles are plying on the hospital road. Due to the movement of heavy vehicles and trucks loaded with goods, covered vans, and sand trucks on the road, various places have been turned into a bad condition due to the formation of potholes. This road, which is of public importance, has a government technical school and college, hospital, civil surgeon’s office, district fisheries office, mosque, clinic, diagnostic center, various government offices and important institutions. Large potholes have formed at various places on this road. The drains along the road have not been repaired for a long time. As a result, the drains are almost blocked with garbage. Rainwater has flowed and caused a blockage on the road. It has been raining intermittently in Rajbari for this week. Due to this rain, the road from in front of the Public Health Mosque to Rail Gate No. 2 is submerged in water. This is severely disrupting the movement of the general public.

In addition, several thousand autorickshaws, rickshaws, vans and other vehicles ply on the Rajbari Railgate-Urakanda embankment route every day. The road from Railgate to Nurpur is in very bad condition. The entire road from Railgate to Harijan Palli to Nurpur is in disrepair. The pitch has come off in various places, and the soil has come out in some places. Again, large potholes have been created in some places.
In addition to Hospital Road and Urakanda Road, the municipality’s Dry Factory Road, Godar Bazar Road, Technical to Sreepur Bazar Road, South Bhabanipur Road, Dhunchi Road and all the roads in the 9 wards of the municipality are in bad condition.
According to Rajbari Municipality sources, several other roads including Rajbari Sadar Hospital Road and Ethimkhana Road have been damaged. One Bank’s project has been presented for the renovation of Sadar Hospital Road, 1675 meters, Panna Chattar to Taltala, 2120 meters, and Orphanage Road from Rail Gate No. 2. The estimated cost of which is 21.69 crore taka. The project is likely to be approved and tenders will be called within this month.
Jalal Uddin, a resident of Segunbagicha, said that water has accumulated almost knee-deep on Segunbagicha Road. Vehicle movement on this road has stopped. Residents living on this road are facing extreme hardship. This road on Hospital Road is an important road. Various vehicles including freight trucks and sand trucks ply on this road. The hospital is just ahead on this road. Due to such a poor condition of the road, patients find it difficult to go. Occasionally, vehicles overturn. The road is of great public importance. The government needs to pay close attention here.
Motorcyclist Sakhawat Hossain said, “For a long time, the condition of this road has been bad, and pedestrians and those who use it are suffering. The administration and those responsible should pay attention to this road.”
A resident named Suborna Islam said, “We have been seeing the road like this for a few years. There is always water due to water leakage from the water line and drains on the side of the road. The road has broken due to the passage of big trucks. Although some repairs are done every year, nothing has been done this time. We are demanding its immediate repair.”
Rajbari Municipality Executive Engineer Md. Abdul Aziz Khan said, “It is raining in Rajbari like the rest of the country. Several roads in the municipal area, including Hospital Road, have been damaged due to the rain. A project has been taken up from a RUTDP project consisting of three roads, Hospital Road, Orphanage Road and Pannachattar to Taltala Road. The project will be approved within this week. If the project is approved, we will call for tenders within this month.”
He also said that this road gets damaged every year during the rains. We have already raised the damaged road at the TSC intersection. Due to heavy rains, the entire road has been damaged, potholes and holes have formed at various places. A big project has been taken up to repair this road. Even after that, we have taken up the issue of developing the road with RCC. This will alleviate the suffering of the people. We have taken up the project of constructing a new road with RCC drills from Hospital Road to Orphanage Road and from Panna Chattar to Taltala in the same package. The suffering of the people will be alleviated soon.
