B Mirror Report:  A special cabinet meeting is underway at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to approve the proposed national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year before its presentation in Parliament later today.

The meeting, which began on Thursday morning, is being chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is scheduled to present the proposed budget in Parliament in the afternoon. The budget size has been set at Tk 9.38 trillion (Tk 938,000 crore), with a revenue collection target of Tk 6.95 trillion (Tk 695,000 crore).

The proposed budget projects a deficit of Tk 2.43 trillion (Tk 243,000 crore), which the government plans to finance through both domestic and foreign sources. According to budget estimates, Tk 1.16 trillion (Tk 116,000 crore) will come from foreign loans and grants, while Tk 1.27 trillion (Tk 127,000 crore) will be raised from domestic sources.

Of the domestic financing, Tk 1.12 trillion (Tk 112,000 crore) is expected to come from the banking sector, with the remaining Tk 15,000 crore to be collected through savings certificates and other sources.

The budget proposal will be placed before Parliament under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. It will be the country’s 55th national budget and the first budget presentation by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury under the current government.

Under parliamentary procedure, the budget must receive cabinet approval before being presented in Parliament. It will then require the consent and signature of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The new fiscal year’s budget is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026.
