Commonwealth is eager to support Bangladesh’s reform efforts

BM Desk : Ahead to the April 2026 general elections, Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Iyerkor Botchwe has stated that the Commonwealth is eager to assist Bangladesh with political changes. We are prepared to help Bangladesh if it so desires, particularly with regard to constitutional reform, she stated.

She said this while meeting with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser, at a hotel in London. The chief advisor to Bangladesh’s interim administration, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is currently on a four-day official visit to the UK.

According to Touchwe, the Commonwealth’s other top aims include boosting investment and commerce as well as helping member nations fight climate change. According to Ghanaian Botchwe, the Commonwealth’s member states presently trade almost US$850 billion annually, and there are plans to increase it to US$1 trillion in the future.

“Climate change affects many Commonwealth members, many of which are small countries,” he said. We’ll make an effort to give them access to climate money. The Commonwealth Secretary-General was urged by Principal Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to investigate the potential of sports and youth engagement among member states.
“Sport is not simply a kind of amusement; it is also a social aspect,” stated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwe, secretary-general of the Commonwealth. Players are encouraged to start their own businesses. Sports can serve as a reminder of the Commonwealth. The 1.5 billion people who live in the Commonwealth are young, and attempts are being made to engage them in a variety of activities, he added.

A plan to overhaul the Commonwealth Scholarship for students is also in the works, he said. The Principal Advisor stressed the importance of setting priorities.Senior Secretary for SDGs Lamia Morshed, Principal Advisor Lutfe Siddiqui’s Special Envoy, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Abida Islam, and National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman attended the occasion.
