Dhaka urges BIMSTEC members to finalise trade agreements

BM Desk : Today, April 2, Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin called on all BIMSTEC members to continue their full cooperation in order to ensure that the six core trade agreements are finalized on time.

According to a news release from the foreign ministry, he stated at the 25th BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) in Bangkok that “realization of the FTA is crucial for our region’s common economic progress.”
Bangladesh is sending five people to the SOM, led by Jashim Uddin.

Trade Facilitation, Rules of Origin, Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters, Dispute Settlement Procedures and Mechanism, Investment and Trade in Services, and Goods of the Framework Agreement on the BIMSTEC Free Trade Area are the six unfinished accords.

On April 4, 2025, the 25th Session of the BIMSTEC SOM began in advance of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.

Results pertaining to BIMSTEC Centers, such as the BIMSTEC Center of Excellence on Tropical Medicine and the BIMSTEC Center for Weather and Climate, were discussed at the meeting.

The proposed provisional agenda and report for tomorrow’s Twentieth BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting were deliberated and finalized by senior officials.

The draft Provisional Agenda and draft Declaration of the Sixth BIMSTEC Summit were also finalized at the conference.
The 26th Session of the BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be in Bangkok on Friday for the 6th BIMSTEC Summit of Heads of State/Governments.
