Abdur Razzaq Kushtia : Detective Branch Police have arrested another accused, Mahmud Hasan, in the attempted murder case of Amar Desh newspaper editor Dr. Mahmudur Rahman at the Kushtia court premises. He is accused number 26 in the case.
He was arrested at around 10:30 am on Wednesday from his home in Yugia Sabji Farm neighborhood in Kushtia city.
The arrested Mahmud is the son of Mamunar Rashid, a resident of Yugia Sabji Farm Para, Ward No. 14 of Kushtia Municipal Council. Mahmud had been in hiding since the escape of fascist Hasina.
Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Md. Moradul Islam confirmed this to BSS on Wednesday morning.
According to the case file, on July 22, 2018, Mahmudur Rahman, editor of Amar Desh, former president of Kushtia District Chhatra League and current president of District Swechchhasebak League, came to appear in the Kushtia court as the defendant in a defamation case filed by Yasir Arafat Tushar, son of the late Jamil Hossain Bachchu of Baniapara village in Kumarkhali upazila. At that time, the plaintiff was kept locked up in the court building for the whole day on the orders of the people named in the case. Later, around 4:30 pm, armed terrorists attacked the editor of Amar Desh in the court premises and he was seriously injured with a sharp weapon.
Six years after this incident, on October 10 last year, editor Dr. Mahmudur Rahman filed a complaint at the Kushtia Model Police Station, naming 47 people including former Prime Minister fascist Sheikh Hasina, who was fugitive in India, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif, fascist associate former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, then Inspector General of Police Javed Patwary, Kushtia Police Superintendent Mehedi Hasan and Kushtia Model Police Station OC Nasir Uddin, and 20-30 other unidentified people, for an attempted murder.
The statement further states that the court inspector in charge of Kushtia court, Moniruzzaman, assured the plaintiff of police protection and informed him of hiring a private car to take him to Jessore airport. In view of his assurance, the plaintiff left the courtroom of Amar Desh Sadaktar Court and got into a white private car with his two traveling companions. Within 2.1 minutes of getting into the car, accused numbers 11 to 47 along with 15-20 other unidentified accused broke all the windows of the said car with weapons, rods, sticks and bricks and stones. They hit Amar Desh Sadak repeatedly with sticks and stones. He sustained bloody injuries. The statement filed on the charge of attempt to murder was recorded as a case at Kushtia Model Police Station.
