Bangladesh Make key reforms to restore trust: CA at BFA

B Mirror Desk : Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has underscored the significant reforms undertaken by his interim government to rebuild public trust in Bangladesh.

“Our youth and citizens have demonstrated extraordinary resilience and commitment to shaping the future of our nation. To regain public confidence, we have initiated essential reforms,” he remarked during the opening plenary of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) conference today.

Prof. Yunus pointed out the creation of independent commissions designed to reform critical institutions, including the electoral system, judiciary, civil administration, and law enforcement agencies.

“These reforms, once enacted, will lead to a fundamental transformation of our nation,” he stated.

The Chief Adviser noted, “As we work towards a new Bangladesh, we encounter various challenges that are also faced by other Asian nations.”

He specifically mentioned that global financial market instability, political uncertainties, diplomatic tensions, and trade disruptions contribute to volatility.

He highlighted that rising interest rates and the costs associated with debt servicing are exacerbating Asia’s debt crisis.

Despite global commitments to the 2030 Agenda, Prof. Yunus expressed concern over the slow progress, with only 24 percent of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) being achieved.

He pointed out that developing Asian countries are grappling with an annual financing gap for SDGs ranging from 2.5 to 4 trillion US dollars.

In addition to SDG financing, he emphasized the need for substantial investments in infrastructure and economic diversification through responsible financing.

The Chief Adviser remarked that Bangladesh has suffered from corruption and illicit financial flows, which cost developing nations an estimated 1 trillion US dollars each year—far exceeding the total Official Development Assistance (ODA) they receive.

He called for Asia to unite in establishing a multilateral mediation mechanism for the recovery and return of assets.

Food security is facing significant challenges, according to Prof. Yunus. He noted that the rising costs of essential goods are putting a strain on household finances, particularly for families with lower incomes. The situation is worsened by climate change and natural disasters, making it crucial to enhance food supply chains.

He emphasized the importance of energy security, especially for developing countries that rely on imports. Disruptions in energy supply contribute to inflation, economic instability, and increased debt. “We need to pursue sustainable energy solutions and boost investments in renewable sources,” he stated.

The Chief Adviser highlighted the necessity of investing in health and education to foster human capital development. He pointed out that nations that prioritize universal healthcare tend to experience greater economic productivity. Furthermore, he insisted on the need to expand digital education and vocational training to prepare the youth for future job markets.

Regarding the global crisis, Prof. Yunus remarked on the rising geopolitical tensions, worsening climate change, unsustainable debt levels, and escalating humanitarian issues. He expressed concern over the diminishing political will for development cooperation and the alarming lack of collective action in addressing these challenges.

He noted that Asia, which accounts for 60 percent of the global population and 55 percent of global GDP, is at the forefront of these transformations. Emerging norms, regulations, and technologies are redefining governance and economic strategies. “The assumptions that guided policies a decade ago are outdated. The urgency for regional and global collaboration has never been greater,” Prof. Yunus concluded.

The event also featured remarks from former UN Secretary-General and Chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia Ban Ki-moon, Executive Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Ding Xuexiang, and Secretary General of the Boao Forum for Asia Zhang Jun.
