Mansur Alam, Pabna: World Environment Day 2025 was commemorated through a series of events collaboratively organized by Dharitree Raksha Amara (Dhara), Chalanbil Raksha Amara, and Chiknai Nadi Raksha Amara. On Friday, June 27, at 10 am, a discussion meeting took place in the hall of Mulgram Chiknai High School located in Chatmohar Upazila of Pabna. The meeting focused on advocating for the removal of the sluice gate at Demra, the establishment of the ‘Chiknai Nadi Raksha Movement and Ratnai Nadi Salvation Movement’ convening committee, and included a rally and human chain along the banks of the Chiknai River. Md. Jahangir Alam, a river and environmental activist as well as the coordinator of ‘Chalanbil Raksha Amara’, chaired the meeting. Dr. Md. Mansur Alam, the president of Riverine People Pabna and a well-known river researcher, served as the main speaker. He expressed gratitude to the organizers and stated, “If our land or geography is in order, we will be in order, and to maintain that order, we must preserve its veins and branches, namely the rivers.” Out of the 37 rivers in Pabna, only 10 are currently active; 14 are semi-active, and 13 are considered dead. These rivers, suffering from both global and local pressures, are now pleading for survival.I am very happy to know that you, the local people, have come forward to protect the Chiknai and Ratnai rivers. You should come forward, we are always with you with your overall cooperation.” Among others, the discussion was attended by former president of the Chiknai High School Management Committee, Alhaj Md. Abdul Jabbar, Assistant Professor Md. Abdus Salam, current president of the Chiknai High School Management Committee, Md. Sadequr Rahman, lecturer Md. Ashraful Islam, teacher Md. Saheb Ali and local public representative Matiur Rahman Member. The speakers at the meeting talked about the current condition of the Chiknai and Ratnai rivers, encroachment and pollution and the river environment. They talked about the problems of free dumping of poultry farm waste into the river, waste from various markets built on the river banks, waste from hotels and restaurants, damming and creating ponds along the river bed, construction of unplanned bridges-culverts-sluice gates, free dumping of garbage and waste in the river, theft, etc. And to reach these problems to the government, we need to organize or make organizational efforts. All of us present today can turn this small event into a huge movement by involving the people more. Let us all form an organization to protect this country and this land. Then a convening committee was formed by all those present. The officers and members of the committee are: Convener – Alhaj Md. Abdul Jabbar, Joint Convener – 1. Md. Saheb Ali Master, 2. Md. Ashraful Islam Harez; and Md. Khalilur Rahman as member secretary, a 30-member convening committee was formed. About a hundred people including prominent figures of the area, river and environmental activists, teachers, journalists and others were present at the event. Md. Md. Khalilur Rahman was responsible for managing and conducting the entire event. At the end of the event, everyone gathered together to form a human chain on the banks of the Chiknai River; and with this, the event ended.
