Vegetable Market Sees Month-Long Price Surge

The market’s costs for vegetables have been rising for over a month. Prices for veggies have gone up again today (Saturday), after a minor decrease in the past.

These days, the most costly veggies on the market are barbati and brinjal, which cost Tk 120 per kilogram. The least expensive veggies on the market, however, are papaya and sweet pumpkin, which cost Tk 30 per kilogram. All of the other vegetables cost between Tk 60 and Tk 80.

After visiting several marketplaces in the city, this is the image of vegetable pricing.

In today’s market, brinjal costs Tk 120 per kilogram, along with Tk 100 for desi cucumbers, Tk 80 for hybrid cucumbers, Tk 100 for bitter gourds, Tk 60 for patals, Tk 60 for okra, and Tk 60 for chichinga.

In addition, beetroot costs 120 taka per kilogram, kathur lati costs 80 taka per kilogram, gourds cost 70 taka each, jali costs 60 taka each, papaya costs 30 taka each, and green chilies cost at 240 taka per kg, tomato at 180 taka per kg, carrot at 160 taka per kg, sweet pumpkin at 30 taka per kg and raw banana at 40 taka per hali.

Over the weekend, Anwarul Islam, a private sector worker, went to the capital’s Jatrabari market. He said that the market’s vegetable costs are quite exorbitant. The price of brinjal has increased to 120 taka per kg during this atypical season, even though many of us have accepted that it costs 100 taka per kg throughout Ramadan. All other vegetable kinds are likewise becoming more expensive. For a while now, vegetables have been offered at high prices, but we haven’t seen any attempts to keep an eye on the market or control prices. Ordinary consumers like us are forced to pay outrageous rates for vegetables.

Habibul Islam, another Kawranbazar customer, said, “The only affordable veggies in the market are papaya and sweet pumpkin, which cost 30 taka per kilogram. Every other vegetable costs too much. Additionally, there is a greater demand for market shopping today because it is a weekend. As a result, today’s vegetable costs have increased once more. How can we afford to purchase meat and fish if vegetables are so expensive? Almas Ali, a vegetable trader at Malibagh Bazar, commented on the skyrocketing cost of vegetables: “Veggie prices have gone up a little bit today. The retail market has been damaged since we are forced to buy veggies from the wholesale market at higher prices.

Essentially, most vegetables are currently in season, which is why the supply in the market is limited. Additionally, the recent rains have also contributed to the increase in vegetable prices in the market.
