US Imposes new import tariffs on goods from Bangladesh, 59 other countries

The United States has imposed new import tariffs on goods from Bangladesh and 59 other countries, with the measures taking effect from 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday.

According to a notice published in the Federal Register on Thursday, the new tariffs will apply to about 99.4% of total US imports. However, several products, including oil and gas, fertilizers and certain food items, are exempt.

The tariffs have been imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The Trump administration said the legal framework allows it to maintain minimum import duties following a Supreme Court ruling and is expected to withstand legal challenges.

The new measures replace a temporary 10% tariff that had been in effect for 150 days following the court ruling. Goods already in transit before 12:01 a.m. ET on July 28 will remain exempt from the new duties.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the move is aimed at addressing forced labor and unfair trade practices while encouraging US trading partners to strengthen protections for workers and human rights.

Under the final decision, Bangladesh, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Trinidad and Tobago, among others, will face a 10% tariff.

Meanwhile, imports from the European Union, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland will face an effective tariff rate of 10% to 12.5%, while China and 37 other countries will be subject to a 12.5% tariff. The US has also indicated plans to restore tariffs of up to 20% on Chinese goods under a previous trade truce, though no increase beyond that level is currently planned.
