B Mirror Report: Uruguay could emerge as a key gateway for Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) exports to the Mercosur market, BGMEA leaders said during a meeting with Alberto Guani, Ambassador of Uruguay to Bangladesh, at the BGMEA office .
Led by Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan, the BGMEA delegation discussed ways to enhance bilateral trade and investment, particularly in the apparel sector, according to a press release.
BGMEA leaders said Bangladesh, despite being the world’s second-largest apparel exporter, has limited presence in Latin America and sees strong potential in the Mercosur region. Uruguay’s efficient ports and transport facilities could help Bangladeshi exporters access the wider market.
Ambassador Guani expressed interest in increasing garment imports from Bangladesh and proposed exporting Uruguay’s fully traceable merino wool to the country.
Both sides also discussed the need for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and Mercosur to address post-LDC graduation challenges and agreed to strengthen cooperation to boost trade and investment ties.
